چندی پیش هیوندای در یک بیانیه‌ی رسمی اعلام کرد که اپل در حال مذاکره با این شرکت برای برون‌سپاری تولید اتومبیل خودران موسوم به Apple Car است؛ بیانیه‌ای که شایعات و حواشی این محصول را بیش از هر زمان دیگری داغ کرد. در ابتدای هفته‌ی جاری، گزارشی منتشر شد که طبق آن، هیوندای و اپل تا ماه مارس ۲۰۲۱ (اسفند ۱۳۹۹) به توافق خواهند رسید و اولین مدل از وسیله‌ی نقلیه مذکور می‌تواند در کارخانه‌ی کیا موتورز واقع در ایالت جورجیا تولید شود. MacRumors با توجه به اطلاعات به‌دست‌آمده از eDaily، گزارشی تدوین کرده است که براساس آن، هیوندای قصد دارد پروژه یادشده را به کیا موتورز واگذار کند.
گفته می‌شود غول کره‌ای صنعت خودرو به این نتیجه رسیده است که شرکت زیرمجموعه‌اش یعنی کیا موتورز مسئول تولید خودرو خودران اپل باشد و در صورت موافقت کیا، اتومبیل اپل در کارخانه‌های این شرکت در خاک آمریکا تولید خواهد شد. براساس این گزارش، سه‌شنبه‌ی گذشته بین کیا و هیوندای در رابطه با تولید Apple Car مذاکره‌ای صورت گرفته است و پس از تأیید طرح، توافق شده این پروژه برای تسهیل همکاری با اپل در کارخانه وست پوینت (West Point) کیا آغاز شود.
در گزارش مذکور آمده است که شرکت کره‌ای تصمیم گرفته برای حفظ برند و نام تجاری‌اش، فرایند تولید را بر عهده نگیرد. گفته می‌شود هیوندای قصد ندارد همانند شرکای تجاری کوپرتینویی‌ها از جمله فاکسکان و… به کارخانه‌ی مونتاژ اتومبیل اپل تبدیل شود. شواهد حاکی از آن است که هیوندای بسیار محتاطانه برخورد می‌کند و هنوز تصمیم قطعی و موضع نهایی خود را اتخاذ نکرده است. به ادعای شایعات قبلی، اپل با توجه به هزینه‌ی بالای فناوری‌های مرتبط با خودروی خودران و امکانات تولیدی لازم، قصد دارد با یک خودروساز سرشناس برای تولید وسایل نقلیه‌ی الکتریکی و تولید باتری همکاری کند.
پیش از این، تحلیل‌گران بانک گلدمن ساکس پیش‌بینی کرده بودند که حضور در صنعت خودرو برای اپل به‌عنوان یک پلتفرم سخت‌افزاری پشتیبانی‌کننده برای خدماتش منطقی خواهد بود؛ اما سودآوری پایین تجارت خودرو و هزینه‌های بالای تولید، احتمالا به این معنی است که سرمایه‌گذاران این حوزه تأثیر محدودکننده‌ای در کسب درآمد خواهند داشت و ظاهرا این دلایل غول دنیای فناوری را به سوی جست‌وجو برای راه‌های جایگزین، از جمله اعتماد به تولیدکنندگان دیگر برای ایجاد وسیله‌ی نقلیه سوق خواهد داد.
با استناد به گزارش‌های قبلی، توافق احتمالی اپل و هیوندای شامل مونتاژ اتومبیل در کارخانه‌ای مستقر در ایالت جورجیا متعلق به شرکت کیا موتورز یا ساخت کارخانه جدید در این کشور است. اعتقاد بر این است که این چشم‌انداز شامل تولید ۱۰۰ هزار دستگاه وسیله‌ی نقلیه در سال ۲۰۲۴ خواهد بود و هیوندای موظف است ظرفیت تولید سالانه را به ۴۰۰ هزار دستگاه افزایش بدهد. گفته می‌شود این دو شرکت برای تکمیل فرایند تولید و گرفتن بازخورد، قصد دارند نسخه‌ی بتای این خودرو را در سال ۲۰۲۲ عرضه كنند.
گزارش‌های eDaily در رابطه با محصولات اپل همواره با تناقض‌هایی همراه بوده است. بااین‌حال این منبع شهرت خاصی در ارائه‌ی اطلاعات موثق از زنجیره‌ی تأمین خودرو در کره جنوبی دارد؛ اما پیشنهاد می‌شود تا انتشار اخبار موثق و رسمی به گزارش یادشده به دید شایعه نگاه کنید.
